Olympus Mountain Hike

We were just passing by, and once there we thought, why not to pay a visit to the Gods?

You can start the walk to the highest mountain of Greece , Mitikas (2.917 m), from different places, it mainly depends on your physical condition and in the days you want to spend on the montain.

You can go right to the top in a day, but if you are not used to climb peaks, it is quite likely your get sore legs even before finishing. Much earlier.

Mount Olympus sits on the border of the regions of Thessaly and Macedonia.  The easiest access to the mountain and its trails is from the tourist village of Litochoro, at the base of the mountain. It is about 260 miles North of Athens or  57 miles southwest of Thessaloniki.
We parked the camper van in a parking lot 4 km after the Starvos refuge, on the right had side. Where many people start the walk from.
We began to ascent to the mountain early in the morning, because of the heat and because we wanted to go at a normal pace, enjoying it, stopping from time to time and look around. When we arrived at 1800 meters height, the heat had given way to the fog and the temperature had dropped slightly. Good we had a jumper with us.
The footpath until the refuge “A” , which is located at 2100 meters, is beautiful , you walk among ,willows, spruces, pines … and if you hike with no rush but enjoying the surroundings, it is quite possible that you can see squirrels, woodpeckers, eagles or any other of the many species that live there.

2 hours later, when we arrived at 2100 meters height, we found a hammock and a swing around the refuse/shelter, they were calling us to lie on them, it was like a magnet, hey had our name written on them, and here is where we finish the ascent. Between the fog, the comfy hammock and swing, our tireness and the certainty that some day we were going to come back to Greece, we decided to leave the last 800 meters to the top for the next time.

The price for the refuse/shelter is about 13€. No need to book a bed during the week but advisable during the weekends.

Driving back towards Litochoro, after the hike, we found a beautiful spot to sleep, it was like a balcony overlooking the sea.

Have you climbed to the top of the Olympus Mountain? How was your experience?
